Remembering Xena: A Heartfelt Tribute to Our Beloved Soul Cat
This post serves as a tender celebration of the life of our cherished feline companion, Xena, a beautiful soul cat whose unexpected passing on December 3rd, 2016, left an irreplaceable void in our hearts. While the grief for my husband, Alan, and me was profound and heartbreaking, it is with immense joy and gratitude that I wish to dedicate this tribute to her, reflecting on the countless wonderful memories she gifted us during her remarkable life. Xena wasn’t just a pet; she was our fur-baby, a vibrant presence who intertwined herself into the very fabric of our family.

A Paw-some Beginning: Xena’s Early Days
Our spunky little warrior princess, Xena, graced the world in April 2004, hailing from Ventura County, California. It might sound peculiar, but her birth arrived almost precisely nine months after Alan and I exchanged vows. This unique timing, among many other subtle cues, made it feel incredibly fated, as if the universe had specifically chosen us to be her parents. We truly believed she was meant to be ours, a tiny, striped destiny waiting to unfold.
We didn’t actually cross paths with Xena until she was approximately six weeks old. At the time, she was being fostered along with her littermates by a kind work colleague of mine. Our friend, knowing our love for animals, extended an invitation for lunch, suggesting it would be a perfect opportunity to meet the adorable kittens. We already had our senior cat, Roxy, ruling the roost at home, so the thought of adopting another kitten honestly felt like the most naive assumption we’d ever made. Little did we know, our hearts were about to be completely stolen.
The Moment Our Hearts Were Captured
I distinctly recall the very first glimpse I had of Xena. She was a miniature marvel, instantly reminding me of a tiny tiger with her distinctive stripes adorning her legs and a tummy as pure white as freshly fallen snow. She embodied the quintessential kitten – a whirlwind of energy, tearing around my friend’s apartment, engaging in all the delightful, mischievous antics only a kitten can master. She’d fearlessly scale window screens, stalk unsuspecting fish in the aquarium with laser-like focus, and generally wreak charming havoc on the household. Watching the entire litter, but especially Xena, in their playful chaos was utterly enchanting and provided endless entertainment.
After we’d finished our meal and the kittens had finally exhausted themselves from their energetic escapades, a serene moment emerged. I gently scooped Xena into my arms and passed her over to Alan. In a gesture that sealed our fate, she promptly curled up and fell fast asleep on her back in his hands. It was a picture of pure, innocent trust, and a clear sign that this tiny creature had already chosen us.

I believe no further explanation is necessary to convey that this was the definitive moment we knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that Xena would be coming home with us. Our lives were about to change forever. Before we even left my friend’s house, Alan captured a precious photograph of me cradling the very kitten who would soon have both of us completely wrapped around her tiny, soft paw.

The anticipation stretched for a couple more weeks as we had to patiently wait for her official adoption. Animal shelters, quite rightly, require all kittens to be spayed or neutered before adoption, and at that point, Xena was still too tiny, not even weighing two pounds. The moment she finally crossed the threshold into our home, she seamlessly became Roxy’s spirited little sister. She’d follow Roxy everywhere, mirroring her movements, and diligently absorbing all the essential lessons on how to truly be a cat in our household. It was a beautiful sight to behold, watching her learn and grow under Roxy’s watchful, albeit sometimes grumpy, eye.
Sibling Dynamics: Xena and Roxy’s Unique Bond
Here’s a lovely snapshot of the two of them, comfortably lounging together on our stairs, basking in the warm glow of the sun – a rare but treasured moment of feline sisterhood.

Roxy, being the elder and more established queen of the house, never quite embraced the role of an overly affectionate older sister. She certainly imparted more than a few stern lessons to Xena about proper feline etiquette and the established hierarchy within our home. Yet, despite her occasional grumpiness, Roxy tolerated Xena’s youthful exuberance, and they undoubtedly kept each other company throughout their many years together. Their dynamic was fascinating to observe: as cranky and reserved as Roxy could be, Xena was her complete antithesis. Xena was a beacon of playfulness, endlessly silly, rarely upset, and always eager for interaction. She relished a good tummy rub, a trait she exhibited consistently, both as a tiny, mischievous kitten:

And continued to do so with unwavering enthusiasm, even as a graceful, full-grown adult cat:

Our Furry Shadow: Life with a Work-From-Home Cat
When Roxy, our wise and beloved matriarch, passed away at the venerable age of 18 in 2014, Xena truly blossomed and stepped into her well-deserved role as the undisputed princess of our household. With both Alan and I working from home, Xena became our constant companion, our furry shadow. She was privy to all our conversations, receiving an endless stream of affectionate pets, tender kisses, and loving words throughout the entire day. Her presence was a comforting, steady hum in our lives, a constant reminder of unconditional love.

Because I had the immense privilege of spending so much quality time with Xena every single day, I came to know every intricate detail of her unique personality. I could anticipate her needs, predict her subtle movements, and understand her silent communications almost intuitively. She was as integral a part of our family as any animal could ever hope to be. Her mere presence had the power to instantly bring a smile to my face, and even now, as I reflect upon her, or gaze at her photographs, I still feel that powerful, undeniable connection, a warmth spreading through my heart.

She was always “helping” with household tasks, especially when it involved boxes, a cat’s ultimate playground. Here she is, diligently assisting me with the arduous task of unpacking a box, her curious paws and keen interest making the process far more entertaining.

An Unforgettable Bond: More Than Just a Pet
No mere words can truly encapsulate the depth of love I hold for Xena, nor adequately express the profound influence she exerted on my life. She consistently filled my heart with an overflowing measure of joy, and undoubtedly, knowing her made me a kinder, more patient, and ultimately, a better person. It was an extraordinary privilege, a true honor, to share twelve and a half years of my life with her. Her vibrant spirit, her playful essence, and the boundless love she gave will forever remain etched in our memories, never, ever to be forgotten. She was a singular, brilliant light that continues to shine brightly in our hearts.
